styleberryFAQ | style & beauty

Discuss beauty & style products?! TWIST MY ARM! Another one of my favorite subjects & quite a nice break from the heated BabyWise debate over on the styleberry facebook page. Whew! Keeping it light again today with some fun stuff that I use every day! Here are your FAQ’s on style & beauty!

Any advice on how to look chic on a stay at home mommy income (without feeling over dressed)?

Yes!! I wrote about it here & here. Enjoy! :)

And what are your go-to items or basics that you wear everyday?

I am a dress gal. Dresses, dresses & more dresses. I live in them! Flip flops in the summer (Rainbows for casual, but often fancier flip flops if I am feeling it) & boots (like my Steven Intyce) in the “winter.” You can learn how to tuck boots into jeans here. My Hudson Jeans & big cowl necked sweaters…when the weather is awesome. Jeans, shoes & handbags are where I put my money. You can wear any old top & it still looks chic if at least some of your accessories are designer quality.

What are your favorite stores/brands/websites?

Hmmm…so many! I don’t often shop online so stores I frequent include Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack, Anthro, Banana, J Crew occasionally LOFT and I love shopping for bargains at Marshalls & TJ Maxx. I often find all the Nordstrom brands there–you just have to know where to look! Oh, and Target!

Where do you shop?

^^ should answer it!

Where do you shop for your daughter’s clothes?

Hmmm. Grammy sends them?! Really though, she sends a lot of it. My favorite places are Nordstrom, Naartjie, BabyGap, Zara Kids, Target & occasionally Gymboree.

Do you have suggestions for where to shop for cute baby boy clothes?

Zara Kids or Crew Cuts have my favorite baby boy clothes!

Do you have suggestions for a cute work bag/briefcase that is both functional and stylish?

I always used to get my work bags from Franklin Covey. & holy moly–haven’t been to the site since I left the workforce, but Amy Butler has a line over there now! CUTE! But my bags were always black, conservative & HUGE.

Have any favorite everyday purses that you recommend!?

Hmmmm. I recommend my favorite HOBO Wallet (the Lauren) but I am not brand loyal to bags. I tend to buy one really expensive one every year or so. & I usually fall head over heels for it. My favorite splurge bags have been random Italian leather finds at Marshalls! One I picked up for $200 & found online for $650 the same day. SCORE! My best advice, dig, be picky & save so you can splurge!

What brand of make-up do you use?

I am a loooooong time user of Bare Minerals. It was developed back in the Bay Area & I used it way before it became popular! I’ve been using it for almost ten years now.

What are your must-have makeup products?

  • Bare Minerals Powder
  • Bare Minerals Bronzer (Faux Tan is my favorite)
  • Blush (I use Vintage Peach)
  • Bare Minerals Mineral Veil (key to not having shiny skin in this nasty southern heat & humidity)
  • Urban Decay Eye Pencil (in Bourbon)
  • Shu Uemura Mascara (it’s pricey, but it lasts forever–especially when you wear it maybe once a week…)
  • Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler
  • Japonesque Makeup Brushes (again, pricey, but mine have lasted nearly eight years now & look brand new, as I have cared for them well)

& what they look like on:

What’s your skincare regimen?

I keep it super simple, but I was blessed by the skin fairies. I’ve never had any major problems with my skin that I’ve had to trouble shoot. I’ve been using this routine for gosh, ten years? I credit a lot of my success to eating a very clean diet & drinking TONS of water (like at least a liter a day). I think that diet & hydration are key. Oh, and I never go to the pool without a hat with a huge brim. The sun scares me. I stay out of it!

What are your must-have hair products?

I was a Kerastase user for about seven years, but Nowlin recently converted me over to his favorite products by L’Oreal Professionnel & I am seeing equally as good results without spending as much money. Make sure you buy them directly from L’Oreal or a salon so you know you aren’t getting a counterfeit product. Soon Nowlin will be offering them on his website–& I cannot wait to be able to send you there! I use:

What is your favorite nail polish shade of all time?

OPI Cara Mia Crimson :) Just enough shimmer that it stays on my toes forever…

Do you have any favorite products that I just NEED to try? Many of these I have discovered thanks to friends who were huge fans. Let me know what you love!!

    • -shawna- - you’re so sweet! it took a lot of years being teased to get a skin thick enough to want to keep it…but I am glad I kept it instead of went through with what I was going to do at the plastic surgeon’s office years ago!ReplyCancel

  • sara - sorry about the above. Have you ever used the bare minerals eye shadow? Mine doesnt seem to stay on throughout the day despite primer.ReplyCancel

    • -shawna- - I do, with the same problem–creasing. I am not big on eye makeup though–so I never wear eyeshadow!ReplyCancel

  • Marylin - Shawna, I have used bare minerals off and on but have never loved it and I WANT to love it. I have oily skin that always needs help to look nice (good coverage). Any application tips? I use the matte because the original had too much shimmer.ReplyCancel

    • -shawna- - You know, I think success with it lies in the base condition of your skin. When I used moisturizers that were too oily I had very poor results with BM. It clumped and looked terrible. I’d experiment with what goes on your face first & try to find something to combat the oil, then apply BM to as matte of a face as possible! ;)ReplyCancel

  • Marylin - BTW… BEST. EYELINER. EVER.ReplyCancel

  • Jackie - So, LOVE the ZARA line, have never seen that before…but where can you buy that label? (It shows pricing on their site, but can seem to put it in a basket??? – I’m on my work computer, maybe it’s blocking me…) Anyway, thanks for the tidbits, love the post! :)ReplyCancel

    • -shawna- - I KNOW! We are lucky to have one nearby, but you can only buy in store. :/ReplyCancel

  • Bobbi - Hi Shawna! :) I am absolutely LOVING your FAQ write ups!! LOVE them! I just wanted to give you a heads up…today, while at Dillard’s (looking for a Hobo ‘Lauren’ clutch) I got an absolute steal! $30!! And, it’s a “normal” color!!! I’m pretty excited to start using it. BTW-if you’re ever in CO again, it sure would be great to meet you! I actually wonder if you ever covered the Medical Center that I use to work at in Boulder (before we moved to Colorado Springs). You seem so kindred to me…but, I suppose lots of people feel that way, because you are just that way. :)ReplyCancel

  • -shawna- - SCORE!!!!!! We hope hope hope to get back to CO on orders someday! I never worked that state (I was NE, IA, SD) but my hubs is a USAFA grad & I spent a LOT of time commuting to the Springs! Sure is beautiful!! ;) & you are sweet!!ReplyCancel

  • Mrs. Biscuit - Hi Shawna,

I was just rereading some of your archives (love the FAQ!) and noticed it looks like there’s a straw in your nalgene. Is that some sort of special top?? I would love to have a straw for my nalgene!ReplyCancel

  • Asya - i love love love bar minerals! I was an avid M.A.C user, i have the brushes, the bags and all, but i was tired of my face feeling oily and “cakey” with wearing M.A.C and decided to try bare minerals and my old stuff has been locked up since! i actually combine it with my urban decay shadows and primers, no more crease issues or fase aftr long wear.. ive gone all in with bare minerals, i love the 8 hr eyeliner, its the best ever! and the mascara does its job and i dont feel like i have any on! My only suggestion for those who have oily skin like myself… clean clean clean your brushes, i use baby shampoo to clean mine and they are in fantastic condition.ReplyCancel

  • Stiliana - A few weeks ago I discovered an organic hair care line at half price at Marshalls and thought I’d share (I got shampoo, conditioner and hair masque – each $20 for 64 fl. oz.)…
The brand: DermOrganic. Suprizingly good!! You can check out reviews online.. And here is the web site:
Marshalls also carries travel size sets if you feel like trying it out:)ReplyCancel

    • Stiliana - Oh, and by the way, I have a boy and a girl, similar ages to your children and just recently became more addicted to anything natural. Your blog was for sure an inspiration!:)ReplyCancel
